Moroccan M'hanncha Recipe: A Sweet and Nutty Pastry

Made by wrapping a sweet and nutty almond filling in layers of phyllo dough, which is then baked until golden brown. M'hanncha is typically served on special occasions like weddings and holidays, but it's also a popular treat to enjoy with a cup of mint tea. Make Delicious M'hanncha with Kitchen Pal


Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of blanched almonds

  • 1 cup of powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 package of phyllo dough (about 20 sheets)

  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the almond paste, powdered sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. Mix well until smooth paste forms.

  3. Lay out a sheet of phyllo dough on a clean work surface and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process with 6-7 more sheets of phyllo dough.

  4. Spread a layer of the almond paste mixture over the phyllo dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

  5. Roll the phyllo dough into a log, tucking the edges in as you go to form a spiral. Brush the outside with melted butter.

  6. Repeat this process with the remaining phyllo dough and almond paste mixture.

  7. Place the phyllo dough spirals on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.

  8. While the M'hanncha is baking, heat the honey in a small saucepan over low heat.

  9. Once the M'hanncha is finished baking, remove it from the oven and pour the honey over the top.

  10. Let the M'hanncha cool for a few minutes before slicing it into rounds.
