1 cup pitted dates
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup boiling water
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
For the toffee sauce:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F.
In a small bowl, combine the pitted dates, baking soda, and boiling water. Set aside for 10 minutes.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar.
Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the bowl and mix well.
In a separate bowl, sift together the flour and baking powder.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
Using a blender or food processor, blend the date mixture until smooth.
Fold the date mixture into the cake batter.
Pour the batter into a greased 20x20 cm baking dish and smooth out the top.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
While the cake is baking, make the toffee sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat.
Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract and stir until combined.
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
When the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes.
Pour the toffee sauce over the top of the cake and serve warm.
