  • 5-6 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 6 cups beef broth

  • 1/2 cup dry white wine

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

  • Baguette, sliced

  4. Add the beef broth, white wine, bay leaf, and thyme to the pot, and stir to combine.

  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Simmer the soup for 30-40 minutes, or until the flavors have melded together.

  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  8. Place the sliced baguette on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 5-10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

  9. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and place a few slices of the toasted baguette on top of the soup.

  10. Sprinkle-grated Gruyere cheese over the top of the bread.

  11. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
